South Australia delivered one of its strongest events yet, with the 2026 IXOM State and National Best Tasting Tap Water competitions both taking place in Adelaide on the same day — a first for the state.
Nearly 50 participants from across Australia joined the full program, which included technical presentations, networking opportunities, and a site tour hosted by SA Water at the Happy Valley Water Treatment Plant.
Happy Valley WTP also claimed the 2026 IXOM South Australian title, represented by Liam Tothill from SA Water. This marks their second state win since 2016 and a fresh Metro win following a recent history of strong regional performances.
Ahead of the national judging, attendees heard from a range of speakers sharing operational insights and project updates.
The national competition was tightly contested, with Isaac Regional Council (Clermont) taking out the 2026 IXOM National Best Tasting Tap Water award. Tasmania’s Rocky Creek WTP finished a close second, followed by Rous County Council (Nightcap) from NSW in third place.
It was an exceptionally close result across all finalists, particularly among the top three — a testament to the high standard of drinking water produced around the country.
In other major announcements, Shane Watchman from SA Water was named the 2026 SA Operator of the Year.
Congratulations also to Nick Swain and Dan Squire from SA Water, whose significant contributions to both the industry and WIOA were recognised during the event.
The day wrapped up with plenty of energy and good spirits, finishing with a relaxed afternoon of social bowls.
