Falls Prevention Training Program

  • September 09, 2024

What’s happening

WIOA is collaborating with Working from Heights Association (WAHA) and WSAA on a training program focusing on falls prevention. The training is being developed in collaboration with WAHA and Water Industry subject matter experts.

The program has been well received during a comprehensive proof of concept evaluation through ten WSAA members and four WIOA organisations. The outcomes of this POC validated the impact that the falls prevention program delivered by adaptive AI training in regards to learner competency, eliminating knowledge gaps and providing high levels of quality data for the organisation as well as reducing training time supporting productivity returns.

Summary

  • Program is designed to bridge the gap between RTO training and operational safety
  • Proven to improve competency in this critical risk area
  • Focussed scenarios specific to the water sector
  • Reducing operational risk
  • Saving learning time by 40-50%

Why are we doing this?

Falls are a leading cause of fatalities and injuries across the construction sector. Despite the ongoing development of campaigns, initiatives and safety procedures, injury and fatality rates are remaining stubbornly high.

Existing training does not always deliver on the core competencies required for safe working at height due to a generic one-size-fits all approach and the diversity and quality of training providers. The new WAHA AI Adaptive Learning course is complimentary to the RTO delivered “Work safely at heights” training and has been proven to efficiently identify and rectify the gaps in competency that directly impact safety incidents, empowering workers to make better decisions and apply safer work practices.

WIOA as a representative body for the construction industry, have a responsibility to identify and help drive improvements across the sector, including lifting overall safety standards.

Our support of this project is a stepping stone in the development of an industry-wide, standard training program that ensures consistency and verifiable competency for all operators exposed to fall risks.

The training solution

This project is the result of a collaboration between WAHA, providing the subject matter expertise, and Area9 Lyceum, a global leader in AI Adaptive Learning who specialise in the development of innovative and evidence-based training. It has been supported by foundation partners John Holland Group and Programmed as part of their ongoing commitment to best practice in safety.

The training is comprised of three modules, including industry-based learning scenarios designed to reflect the unique risk factors and work environments found in the water sector.

The AI intelligence underpinning the training identifies any gaps in a person’s understanding of heights safety practices. It then personalises how the learning is delivered to the participant until the required level of competency is demonstrated. Adjusting in real time, like google maps, effectively provides the user with a personalised teacher to guide them on their journey to competency!

The total course will take between 45min – 60 min to complete, depending on the participants level of experience and existing competency.
