WIOA Talks – Extreme Events

Australians are already experiencing the effects of our damaged climate.

Future predictions indicate the likelihood of more heatwaves and more extreme storm events right across the country. Dealing with these extreme events will test the contingency plans of many organisations as they look to deliver their operational response.

Following an extreme storm event in June 2021 in Victoria, we have asked some WIOA Members to provide an insight into what happened and how it impacted their operations, and whether their existing contingency plans were adequate.

Peter Thomas – Yarra Valley Water
• Network vulnerabilities during an extreme event
• Operational resiliance

Tommie Conway – Melbourne Water
• Impact of extreme event on water supplies
• Overcoming operational issues in treatment plants and networks

Aaron Ward – Melbourne Water
• Challenges in managing water quality and treatment plant setpoints
