About the role

These roles are critical in maintaining the integrity and safety of Townsville’s drinking water supply and will uphold all commitments as stated in Townsville City Council’s Drinking Water Policy. To do so, the position will routinely perform sampling and inspection regimes and make operational changes guided by, but not limited to, the Townsville Water Drinking Water Quality Management Plan and the Australian Drinking Water Guidelines.

You’ll be responsible for servicing a population of approximately 194,072 (and growing) across a minimum of 85,952 connected properties. In the 2018/2019 financial year 46,810ML of potable water was delivered to our customers via 4 treatment plants, 23 water pumping stations, 18 chlorinators, 41 reservoirs and 2,654km of distribution mains.

There is high earnings potential above the base salary due to relevant allowances payable for being on the on-call roster and after-hours duties and overtime.

About you

It’s essential you have a Certificate III in Water Treatment, and you will be required to participate in the on-call roster and be available for after-hours duties.
At a minimum, you’ll also require:

  • Senior First Aid and CPR Certification
  • Confined Space Entry Certification
  • General Construction Induction Card
  • C Class Drivers Licence
  • Licence to perform high risk work – LF Forklift Truck.
  • Tertiary qualifications in science for a related discipline would be well regarded.

Other attributes that would be evident are a knowledge of modern water treatment theory and processes and of the Australian Drinking Water Guidelines. You would be skilled in the operation of water treatment process equipment and instruments, and in the application of water treatment principles to potable water systems.

Your experience in the operation of small conventional and membrane water treatment plants, performance of operator level maintenance on water systems, operation of SCADA systems, computer-based databases and material management systems and collection of water quality samples and the interpretation of laboratory results would be clearly visible.
